Dow Corning awarded global ISO 9001 registration

PRESS RELEASE

September 27, 2002

BSI Inc, the leading North American management systems registrar, has granted global ISO 9001 registration to Dow Corning Corp, whose corporate headquarters are located in Midland, Michigan.

The ISO 9000 family of standards represents an international consensus on good management practices with the aim of ensuring that an organization can continually deliver the product or services that meet the client's quality requirements.

To be certified to the standard, companies must implement a quality management system (QMS) embracing all company's activities, including: staff training, customer interaction, meeting customer requirements, product design and development, purchasing materials and services, and delivering products and services.

Certification to ISO 9001 reinforces to customers through an independent third party, that Dow Corning operates a QMS in accordance with the standard. With this recent global registration, the company merged separate registrations from all over the world, including sites in North America, South America, Asia (from Japan to Thailand, including China), Australia and Europe.

“Dow Corning has transformed itself from a company focused on products to a solutions company that exactly meets the needs of our customers around the world," Stephanie Burns, Dow Corning executive vice president said. “This level of quality certification is yet another proof point in our commitment to understand our customers' needs to solve their problems and seize their biggest opportunities."

Sophie Vanderhaeghe, coordinator of the Global Quality Management System (GQMS) at Dow Corning explained, “The GQMS allows our organization to better understand the product and service related requirements of our customers globally and satisfy them exactly. It will contribute to process effectiveness. Our single registration allows a substantial reduction in costs to maintain separate Quality Management Systems."

Ron Mathis, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for BSI Inc said: "We are very pleased to announce the registration of Dow Corning to the ISO 9001 standard.

"Dow Corning's registration to this standard demonstrates the company's dedication in establishing a culture that encourages setting and maintaining high standards, identifying and resolving problems, accepting recommendations for improvement, and fostering mutual respect and effective communications between the company and its customers, employees, and vendors. Registration demonstrates their corporate commitment to quality," Mr Mathis added.

In a recent survey conducted by Dow Corning, customers indicated that they place a top priority on product quality and consistency from shipment to shipment. The company expects its single registration will present a consistent image to its customers. Furthermore, the company believes its customers' perceptions of Dow Corning as a global supplier are enhanced when all units carry the same registration.
